Day 3

Today brought us a minor set back.
Last night while giving K a bath I noticed he had an open wound. Nothing too crazy just an area that had been rubbing on his braces and rubbed his skin a little raw in one place. Problem is, when kids with braces get any sort of open wound you have to be extra careful because it can be made worse easily.

Think about if you run in a new pair of shoes and get a blister. If you keep running in them it probably won’t go well. So what do you do?

Usually this just means we give K a break from weight bearing, get his braces adjusted to reduce rubbing potential and let him take some extra time out of braces. Problem is with our intense schedule this is really hard to do.

  1. The whole thing with intensive is to get him walking/weight bearing more
  2. Our orthotics person is back in North Carolina, so adjustments can’t really happen here.
  3. Intensive is everyday so we don’t have time for big breaks. It’s not like we can pause and come back another time.

Luckily there is still a lot of non weight bearing things we can work on with K right now to at least try and give his feet a break. The therapists are helping us come up with some short term solutions to help protect his feet so that hopefully we can reduce the pressure points and prevent any further issues.

I bought up a whole bunch of first aid items we are going to try to help him. Hopefully one sticks and we can soldier on here. Honestly I was a little bummed and discouraged today by this set back. But this is life and we will push forward. Let’s just hope we can figure this out…and fast.
