10 days down! That’s 40 hours of therapy for K. Wow that’s a lot of therapy. It is pretty unbelievable what these kids can do. I watch as all the kids push through their sessions, and it’s pretty darn amazing. These kids go through more in their day to day lives than most of us do in a lifetime (medically) yet they push hard.
As I ran another 3.1 miles today and felt “so tired” I just remember K and how he has basically run 10 marathons in the last 2 weeks. End of pity party immediately.
Overall this week was really good and lots of gains were seen. His core is getting so much stronger. He can hold a tall kneel much better, his balance has improved greatly and his stamina is back (or maybe even more) than he was pre surgery. They have been working on a lot of glute strength as well as he has a very hard time activating those muscles on his own.
He has made huge strides in his independence during his OT session. He has learned to tie shoes (still needs practice but he knows the steps), he is learning to dress and undress himself completely by himself (including his AFO braces which is huge!!!), he has mastered buttons and zippers. We are working on good hand washing. He is really learning to be more independent which I love…but also makes me secretly sad. As I watch him grow it’s an ever constant reminder that he isn’t my baby anymore. Learning to let go is really hard, especially with K. Since he has always relied on adult help it’s really hard to let go of that desire to help him. But I am thrilled that he is able to do so much on his own.
As we head into our final week I know it will bring all the emotions. Intensives are like that. We will be so happy to have more free time to enjoy our summer together, but we will miss all the families we have met. Since we are the only truly local family at this session, it means everyone else goes back home. It’s always a bittersweet time around NAPA. Enough with the feels today. It’s time to sign off and rest up for our final week!

Don’t let this photo fool you, this was the highlight of his day. They bungeed him to the top of the cage and let him bounce on a trampoline. (They had already taken it away when I snapped the photo). He loved flying in the air. Everyone was cracking up.
