Day 9

The exhaustion was real today. Our morning session started out great. K worked so hard, but at about 40 minutes in he said he was done. They pushed him a little to test if he was just playing, but he had had enough and was ready to rest. I got really nervous because I was very worried what the rest of the day would look like. We still had 3 more hours of hard work.

During our break I let K watch shows, have some snacks and just have some quiet time. I noticed he was not really eating and just laying on the sofa watching his shows. I could tell he was genuinely very tired today. Inside I was stressing out because I was starting to think either A) he was not feeling well and something was really wrong and B) our afternoon session was shaping up to be a disaster.

When we arrived back at the center he seemed to perk right up. The next hour went amazing. He walked, he practiced standing, he did step ups, he tried walking stairs and even climbed the wall ladder. I could tell he was tired, but his spirt was up. Then 3rd hour came and we almost lost him (mentally).

He started out ok, but very quickly he was just done with it. He loves Katie (our therapist the 3rd hour) but she does make him work hard and today he was not up for it. Thank goodness she recognized we were losing him fast and quickly changed plans. She let us take a step back and we even changed rooms. We went to a quieter room and tried just a little play. This did the trick. The change of venue and activities brought K back. What started as play quickly turned to work…hard work, but K didn’t realize it because he was enjoying the new activities. Katie really saved what was shaping up to be a disastrous hour and he ended up working super hard.

I am so thankful for our wonderful therapists who understand kids. They work so hard to really try and make this a fun experience even though it is extremely hard for our kids.

  1. I am so glad they can sense when a change of plans is necessary. Kyle is exhausted, I’m sure, from all the hard work he has completed each day! It is awesome they are making it fun when his energy is depleted. He deserves a big rest this weekend! You too. Take care of yourself!
